The Accidental Artist exhibit in the Slidell Cultural Center

What happens when people discover, quite by accident, that they have artistic talent of which they were unaware? Amazing stories of incredible artists.

About seven years ago, 42 year old Mickey Asche found himself struggling with a knee injury that left him unable to work. Though the challenge proved frustrating to Asche, his wife, Milo Stephens, was also left a bit flustered that her husband had so much time on his hands and so few ways he could expend his energy. That twist of fate led her to purchase paint and brushes she instructed him to entertain himself.Little did she know that this decision would change his life-and, ultimately, hers.

Asche discovered that he possessed a remarkable gift of which he was totally unaware. He was a natural born artist, and the works that he created astounded not only his wife, but also all who had the opportunity to see them. His inner artist had been unleashed.

That accidental discovery of his talent led to his wife, Milo's discovery of a similar gift. It's a trait the two shared with New Orleans born Keith Dellsperger, who tried his hands at painting after a 28 year career as a photographic restoration artist and graphic designer. Kelly Landrum-Hammell, an agent for Elite Models in New York, gave herself a pottery class for her birthday, and once she touched the clay, knew that pottery was her destiny. Then there's the story of Kenny Bridges, whose incarceration for a non-violent drug offense at the age of 24 led him to search for positive new directions in life, and he discovered his artistic gifts.

All five of the artists will have their work on display in The Accidental Artist exhibit, opening Friday, October 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall, 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. The inspiring exhibit will remain on display through Dec. 1, 2012. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and a Saturday viewing opportunity on Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Group appointments and school field trips are available by reservation. Admission is free.
